I observed my civic duty and voted this morning. Our church serves as a polling place and we decided to try to be really hospitable today.
So we put out free donuts, cookies, sandwiches, coffee, water, tea, etc. for those waiting in line to vote.
The lines here were bad at 7 am and they lasted until around 9:30 am. People got here before 6 to get in line! I look for the lines to get worse again after 5.
I've heard good comments about our snacks. One woman was on her cell phone and I overheard her saying, "Do you have donuts and coffee at your polling place? You should have moved to Piedmont!"
It's good to exercise our democracy. I saw Harlan Gross and Josh Willis (two of our high school seniors) walk in and get to vote in their first election and it made me proud to be an American. We certainly support each person's right to vote in our church. We're so happy to continue to be a polling place for Piedmont even after we move. We won't intimidate anyone on which way to vote but we will tempt you with some high calorie snacks!
Thanks to everyone who brought food and helped with our hospitality table. I think there's a song that says, "They will know we are Christians by our love." Maybe we should ammend it to " by our cookies".
